Distinguished Professor Dale Webber, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies Mona Campus(UWI Mona),

Distinguished Dr. Gunjan Mansingh, Head of the Department of Computing of the UWI Mona,

Representative of Huawei Jamaica,

Ladies and gentlemen, friends,

Wah Gwaan!

It is my great pleasure to attend today’s handover ceremony. Thanks for the UWI Mona, especially the Faculty of Science and Technology for organizing this event. I am very honored to visit once again the beautiful UWI Mona and meet with Principal Webber, teachers and students. Both of us expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation in fields such as ICT during my last meeting with Principal Webber. Today we are very glad to witness the latest progress made in the development of the ICT Talent Hub. On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica, I would like to send my heartfelt congratulations.

The ICT Talent Hub jointly initiated by Huawei Jamaica and the UWI Mona one year ago has injected new impetus into the development of Jamaica’s digital economy and become an important part of China-Jamaica practical cooperation. This year, the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica has donated 5.4 million JMD for the purchase of educational equipment of the Hub, which aims to further promote the development of the Hub and provide support for Jamaica’s STEM(Science, Technology, engineering and mathematics) development and cultivate more talents in that aspect.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence, setting the stage for Jamaica’s new journey of “Reigniting a Nation for Greatness”. The Jamaican Government sets great store by the development of the ICT sector and STEM curricula, and has been pushing for digital transformation. Positive outcomes have been achieved. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Jamaica. Recently, our countries jointly hosted a series of celebrating events, including the Symposium on China-Jamaica Relations at 50 and Beyond, China (Shandong)-Jamaica Investment Promotion Conference, and the Reception in Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Jamaica, which have jointly opened up a bright prospect for our cooperation.

Digital economy is part and parcel of China-Jamaica practical cooperation and represents an essential component in our countries’ high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. China will continue to actively support Jamaica in developing the ICT sector and STEM curricula by pooling the strengths of our countries’ government departments, universities, research institutions and enterprises, so that we can work together to deliver and implement the Global Development Initiative(GDI) proposed by President Xi Jinping. In particular, we can promote our practical cooperation in digital economy, inter-connectivity and other key areas in the GDI to jointly foster an open, fair, equitable and non-discriminatory environment for innovation and digital economy development, improve our digital infrastructure, bridge digital divides, advance the all-round development of digital economy, and achieve common prosperity.

Thank you all!
